Testimonials and success stories

Testimonial

"My experience of completing my PhD with the School of Medicine and the Division of Rehabilitation and Ageing has been extraordinary.

The division has some of the most inspiring, talented and knowledgeable researchers in the world, all of whom value the contribution of you as a PhD student, make you feel welcome in their world, and support you to be the best researcher you can be.

I feel strongly that the opportunity to study and work alongside other clinicians and clinical-academics has been a cornerstone of my success."

Success stories

Dr Katie Robinson

Katie completed her PhD with us in 2016 on chair based exercise for frail older people.

She then went on to secure a research assistant post on a large multi center rehabilitation study alongside her clinical role in older peoples rehabilitation services.

In 2017 she was appointed to a NHS Band 8a post as a clinical academic in older peoples' health in which she was delivering research, research support to others and a clinical service.

Since then she has won a Capacity Development Award from the local Clinical Commissioning Group, an NIHR Advanced Post Doctoral Fellowship and a NIHR Research for Patient Benefit grant as the chief investigator.

We have continued to support Katie throughout her career and was instrumental in securing the funding for the NHS 8a post.

Dr Ben Smith

Ben completed his PhD with us in 2018 on patella femoral pain, with 9 publications under his belt.

Since then he has gone on to win an NIHR Bridging fellowship, which has allowed him to work part-time for 6 months in the Nottingham Clinical Trials Unit and a Health Education England post doctoral fellowship.

He is now applying for a post doctoral fellowship to the NIHR.

We worked with his employer to develop a Band 8a clinical academic post which Ben has been successful in winning.
