Professor Ian Gilmore elected to Academy of Medical Sciences Fellowship

Professor Ian Gilmore

Professor Ian Gilmore FMedSci, Head of Science and senior fellow at the National Physical Laboratory (NPL), and visiting Professor at the University of Nottingham, was recently elected in 2023’s cohort of Fellows of the Academy of Medical Sciences. He joins 1,400 esteemed scientists providing career support to the next generation of researchers and contributing to the Academy’s influential policy work to improve health in the UK and globally.

Fellows of the Academy are recognised for their contributions to the advancement of biomedical and health science, cutting edge research discoveries, and translating developments into benefits for patients and wider society. Ian Gilmore made pioneering advances in high-resolution molecular imaging by mass spectrometry. In particular, his innovation of OrbiSIMS technology revolutionised the ability to visualise the distributions of drugs, metabolites and other chemicals in biological tissues with exquisite detail.

Professor Gilmore is also the founding director of the National Centre of Excellence in Mass Spectrometry Imaging (NiCE-MSI, supporting industry and academia through one of the largest ranges of imaging capabilities worldwide) and a member of the new UK Committee on Research Integrity.
