Heike Bartel presented with Mark Pearson their work on creative expressions of Long COVID at the international conference 'Framing and Re-framing "Pandemic Documentary"' at the University of Nottingham.
She also collaborated with an interdisciplinary team of researchers at the EDIFY summer meeting.

Our free online training tool 'Consider Eating Disorders in Men' has received renewed accreditation by the Royal College of General Practitioners and renewed endorsement by the Royal College of Nursing.
Heike Bartel also delivered the keynote address on poetry, mental heath and eating disorders at the 'Poetry and Mental Health Symposium' as part of Nottingham’s Poetry Festival.

This new animated film from Hungry for Words gives insights into the link between eating disorders/disordered eating and excessive exercise. Individuals (of all genders, body shape, size and weight) who have exercised excessively as part of anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder and muscularity orientated eating disorder talk about their experience in their own words. It encourages all of us to listen and reflect but it may encourage in particular gym staff, sports teachers, coaches, personal trainers and those working in primary healthcare to start the conversation.

We're delighted to announce that the Hungry for Words project won the Research Project of the Year (Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences) in the Times Higher Education Awards 2021 - the "Oscars" of higher education.
We'd like to dedicate the award to the boys and men who shared their experiences of eating disorders with us - with courage to overcome stigma, creativity, and trust in us. This has allowed us to create training tools for doctors and others that make a real difference to how they treat this often-overlooked patient group.
Professor Heike Bartel said “I am thrilled that the award recognises the power of arts and humanities to tell these stories that need to be heard urgently. Our collaborations with artists and translators are an important part of this, and I am grateful to the university, the AHRC and Wellcome for giving me the opportunity, time, and funding to undertake this work. This is what universities and funders should do; take risks and put trust in researchers' ideas when taking on challenging projects. We are determined to use the momentum of this award to drive our work further.”
The judges described Hungry for Words as “a strong, coherent project already enjoying considerable impact in terms of awareness, stigma challenge, therapeutic attention and organisational recognition and benefit”.

We are proud to announce Dr Heike Bartel's role as Co-I in the project 'Eating Disorders: Delineating illness and recovery trajectories to inform personalised prevention and early intervention in young people (EDIFY)', led by Professor Ulrike Schmidt at Kings College London and Dr Helen Sharpe at the University of Edinburgh (£3.8m, four years starting Sept. 2021).
This project will see researchers work directly with young people with eating disorders to develop an interdisciplinary, evidence-based model of how these conditions develop and how young people recover. Heike Bartel will co-lead the arts-humanities strand of this project researching how interdisciplinary narratives of illness and recovery and creative methods such as theatre, writing and comedy can be used to increase understanding amongst the public and professionals

Dr Heike Bartel (School of Cultures, Languages and Area Studies), was shortlisted for the 2020 ‘Best public engagement initiative’ prize, for her work on eating disorders in men and boys. The annual awards are run by the Institute for Policy and Engagement, and aim to celebrate and recognise the excellent work carried out by researchers and academics in achieving policy impact and engaging the public with current research.
