The Centre provides an overarching community for regional literature specialists throughout the modern era. Our members are involved in teaching and research at both postgraduate and undergraduate levels.

PhD research

We have a good track record of successfully supervising PhD candidates in a wide range of areas.

  • Text-editing and literary history including the Renaissance, the Long Eighteenth Century, Romanticism, the Nineteenth Century, Modernism, the Contemporary
  • Regional literature and culture (including Irish and Scottish writing)
  • Postcolonial literatures including the literature of British India
  • Individual authors including: Richard Brome, Jonathan Swift, Robert Southey, Charles Dickens, Henry James, Rudyard Kipling, Oscar Wilde, D. H. Lawrence, Seán O’Casey, Virginia Woolf, J. M. Coetzee, Ian McEwan, James Joyce, Wyndham Lewis, David Dabydeen, and Caryl Phillips
