Breaking Bread: A Community Cooking Project with Refugees

An online publication, called 'Breaking Bread: A community cooking project with refugees' was recently launched as part of the project 'Aromas that nurture: Sharing sensory experiences with the refugee community', a collaboration with the Institute for Policy Engagement, and involves working in partnership with Ignite futures and Nottingham and Notts Refugee Forum. Alongside playwright Andy Barrett, the team worked with refugee families through workshops designed to create narratives based on life journeys, memories and associations from food and aromas.

The publication includes lots of stories, photos and artwork from the workshops, recipes and written accounts of the project participants. This also includes account from Dr Roda Madziva, where she reflects on her experiences as a researcher and on the need to build authentic relationships with refugee families.

A blog was also written by Dr Roda Madziva, entitled 'Aromas that nurture: sharing sensory experiences with the refugee community'. Maria Richards, Head of Public Engagement has also written another piece in conjuction to this publication.

The project, and publication, was funded through The Institute for Policy and Engagement and the School of Sociology and Social Policy, University of Nottingham.
