Student Switch Off Winners Announced!

Student Switch Off results 2019-20!

Thank you to all halls residents for taking part in this year’s Student Switch Off competition. We know that many of you are no longer living in the halls, but we still want to recognise the fantastic sustainability efforts we saw in Terms 1 & 2 from residents.

Up until March, we were keeping track of which hall had been saving the most energy per person & recycling the best, and we are happy to announce that the overall winners for 2019-20 are Hugh Stewart, closely followed by Lincoln and Derby in 2nd and 3rd place, respectively.

Congratulations to our top 3, and our winners in Hugh Stewart! As we are not able to come together to celebrate, we will instead be making a charity contribution, and Hugh Stewart residents will be able to select the charity. You can vote for your preference here before 5th June: http://studentswitchoff.org/vote-for-your-charity/

Collectively we saved 57,000 kg CO2 just through energy reduction (equivalent to more than 60 return flights from Manchester to New York), and nearly 800 residents pledged their support of the campaign, taking actions such as saving energy, reducing waste, recycling more and saving water. We also reduced waste from halls by 156 tonnes, and increased the recycling rate by 6%.

We hope you’ve learnt something new this year about sustainable living. If you’re moving into a rented house next year you can view our advice page here for tips on saving money on your energy bills & keeping warm in a private house.
