New Economic Geographies

The New Economic Geography research theme has a vibrant and dynamic research culture, advancing conceptual and empirical agendas in cultural and relational approaches to the analyses of economic phenomena in contemporary globalization. Work in this research theme has been focussing on three key areas:

Money and finance
Economic knowledge and the construction of the New Economy
Economic systems of value, exchange and circulation

The key members of this theme are: Jonathan Beaverstock (theme leader), Louise Crewe, Shaun French, Sarah Hall, Andrew Leyshon, Vlad Mykhnenko, and Adam Swain. Two Special Professors are associated with this theme Jamie Peck (University of Madison-Wisconsin) and Michael Samers (University of Kentucky). Samers was a member of the School 2001-2006.

The theme has an excellent track record of obtaining external grants, doctoral and CASE studentships from external sources, including the Economic and Social Research Council, and has a very vibrant community of post-doctoral research associates and postgraduate research students. The theme hosts two very successful taught Masters MSc programmes: Financial Services and Society and Economy, Space and Society.

All members of the theme, including post-doctoral associates and graduate students, regularly present their research findings at international geographical and interdisciplinary conferences worldwide, and have significant international research links with colleagues in Universitas 21 partner institutions, and at the Global Finance Centre, the University of Nottingham, Ningbo, China.
