Student Profiles

Liane Holey, MSc Environmental Management (2007-2008)

After completing my degree in Geography, I hoped to follow a career in environmental consultancy. However, I wanted to gain more experience and specialist knowledge in the field and so I embarked on the Environmental Management MSc programme. Not only did my analytical capabilities and skills in critical thinking enhance dramatically, but I also reached a whole new level of confidence with regards to the subject area as well as in terms of my communication skills (both oral and written). This subsequently enabled me to actually take pleasure in challenges that I once found rather taxing – from undertaking my Dissertation to filling in online job applications to being confident in job interviews.

The programme allowed me to select the modules that I thought I’d enjoy but that were also important for fulfilling my career aspirations. To name but a few, I think that my modules in Contaminated Land, Environmental Impact Assessment, Environmental Law, Statistics, the Tutorial module and Dissertation have given me an excellent grounding for my career path. Finally, the exceptional support from my tutors and lecturers has been invaluable to me. I now work as a Contaminated Land Technical Officer with a local authority and in a year’s time I will be starting a graduate scheme with a renowned management consultancy in London. I most definitely would not be where I am now if I had not done the Environmental Management MSc.
