Student Profiles

Muhammad Ali, MSc Environmental Management (2005-2006)

Having studied for my BSc (Hons) degree for four years in Soil and Environmental Sciences from NWFP Agricultural University, Peshawar, Pakistan, I made up my mind to make the most important decision of my life. I had not only to travel to the UK, expecting a completely different culture and lifestyle, but also take an interdisciplinary course in Environmental Management.

The reason I applied for the Masters course at the University of Nottingham was based on the fact that the University is amongst the top ten universities in the UK and that the course is a comprehensive interdisciplinary course catering for my personal needs and career aspirations.

Doing the MSc Environmental Management course has changed my life in a number of ways. Since I have a scientific background, by taking a masters degree in environmental management, I have increased my knowledge in a new field which, with my previous experience, has been helpful in improving my future career aspirations. The course provides a range of core and optional modules making it easier to focus on their area of interest.

I am currently working as an Environmental Advisor with a large food production company and without any doubt my EM degree helped me stand out from the crowd and secure this job. Modules like Environment Business and Project Management and Environmental Legislation have been really helpful in my current job, where I advise the business on a range of environmental issues like EMS, climate change, IPPC and carbon footprint, etc.

The staff overall and especially the Environmental Management staff are really friendly and are used to the challenges that international students face. The facilities at the University and specifically at the School of Geography are excellent, especially the resource centre and the open access to computers with fast internet connections. I thoroughly enjoyed working on my dissertation with a lot of support from my supervisor and class mates and it was the most pleasant experience of my student life.

The facilities on campus are excellent and the location of the University in a rapidly growing city in the East Midlands makes The University of Nottingham an ideal, strategic and suitable place to study in. The University as a whole is a great place to study and is amongst the most beautiful and acclaimed campuses in the UK. I am glad I made the choice of furthering my studies here as I have nothing to complain about - only praise for the university and the course that I took. Moreover, since I met many students from different parts of the world, I now have a lot of new friends who have taught me a lot about their cultures and countries.

On the whole the course has the right mix of social and scientific subjects, a range of optional modules to choose from, excellent faculty to learn from and a very warm and friendly environment to develop one’s abilities. I would recommend it to any one, whether a home student or an international student, and whether someone wants to study further or has the intention of pursuing a career in the field of Environmental Management.
