Marcus Shukla, MSc Economy, Space & Society (2007-2008)
Having completed my undergraduate degree at the University of Leicester, I was looking to further my understanding of issues in Economic Geography as this is something that has always been of interest to me. Coming to Nottingham wasn't a difficult decision as the department is highly regarded with prominent academics in the field. The course content is stimulating and varied, allowing me to look at several issues within the discipline and the key actors and institutions involved.

Despite not doing my undergraduate degree at Nottingham I was able to settle in quickly and this was thanks in no small part to the staff and other members on the course. The seminars were one reason for this as they encouraged good quality discussion and debate whilst having a decent informal nature to them.

One of the most satisfying aspects of the course was developing a critical understanding of issues regarding the geographies of economic activity. We were introduced to new approaches in the subdiscipline and the modules encouraged us to think critically about the relations between space and economy. Moreover these approaches question the theories which are dominant in mainstream economics, especially pertinent given the current global economic climate.

The breadth of the course was also something which I thoroughly enjoyed because whilst it concentrated on issues within Economic Geography, we would often be required to look at issues within other disciplines in the social sciences. This I felt was extremely rewarding indeed and provided us with a greater scope for our dissertations.

The university's high number of postgraduate students is testimony to the variety and quality of courses available and it is a great place to study. Nottingham itself is a vibrant, multi-cultural city which has lots to offer for students, from Test matches at Trent Bridge to live concerts at the Arena. The campus is set in splendid grounds just outside the city centre, but all the amenities are only a short bus journey away.

I am currently employed in a consultancy role in local government regeneration projects, something which I thoroughly enjoy and was well prepared for thanks to the Economy, Space and Society programme. The course is rewarding, interesting and crucially, relevant, and I wholly recommend it for anyone wishing to pursue their interest in the field of Economic Geography.
