Student Profiles

Thomas Wainwright, MSc Economy, Space & Society (2004-2005)

I joined the School of Geography in 2004 to further my education in Geography. I have always been interested in the economic side of ‘Human Geography’ but not many Universities offered a course with an emphasis on the economic. Not only did the course at Nottingham appear interesting and exciting, it also appealed to me because it is run by a University with a world class record and a School taught by leading academics.

The course took my understanding of geography, the economy and society, to a new level and I’m surprised at how much I learnt within just one year. I found the course challenging (but not impossible!) and so I always found the end result rewarding! I enjoyed the course because the staff are approachable and always willing to offer help. The teaching staff’s ongoing research clearly enriched the course, which I enjoyed because it introduced me to cutting-edge work in geography, whilst covering past theory. I also enjoyed the course because of the structure which allows you to study what interests you. The seminars allow you to pursue issues that interest you and offer you the opportunity to ask questions too. My favourite part of the course was the dissertation which enabled me to put what I had learnt into action! The course also helped improve my ‘key’ skills through presentations and writing - something to I think would give you an edge in business- or prepare you for further study.

If you’re working hard then you need to unwind and whatever you like to do - Nottingham’s got it. The campus and student areas are close to the centre, which offers some great bars, clubs, gigs, restaurants and shopping - mixed it with lots of lively atmosphere. The combination of the University’s excellence and the vibrancy of the city enable you to strike the balance between hard work and hard play.
