Spending a year abroad is a fantastic way to consolidate your learning and really get a thorough understanding of the cultures you choose to study.
Your year abroad
- Students joining the course in September 2023 may spend their third year abroad in 2025-2026.
- There will be a range of placements on offer, depending on your language(s).
- Some study placements may be arranged through the Turing scheme, announced by the UK government in January 2021, which replaces the Erasmus scheme.
We have excellent longstanding links with universities, which we are currently in the process of renewing, in the EU and beyond, including in Latin America. Students studying Mandarin benefit from study placements at the University of Nottingham Ningbo campus.
Please note: In order to study abroad you will need to achieve the relevant academic requirements as set by the university and meet the selection criteria of both the university and the partner institution. The partner institution is under no obligation to accept you even if you do meet the relevant criteria.

Joint-honours students with American and Canadian Studies may pursue international study through the Study Abroad Team, which maintains university-wide exchanges.
Students taking joint honours BA International Media and Communications Studies with languages may spend year 3 abroad in the country of their chosen language of study (subject to meeting relevant requirements). These placements are organised by the Department of Modern Languages.

Code of Conduct
For students on their Year Abroad
During your Year Abroad our students remain a student of the University of Nottingham, and therefore subject to the University’s regulations governing student behaviour, conduct, rights and responsibilities. In addition, as an exchange student or employee they are required to comply with the codes and regulations obtaining in either their host institution or place of employment (voluntary or paid). Failure to comply with any of these codes constitutes of a breach of regulations and may result in disciplinary action being brought against them on the part of the host institution, employer, or the University of Nottingham.
Any conduct or action that brings the name of the University of Nottingham into disrepute, damages the reputation of the University, disrupts or interferes with academic, administrative or other activities of the University, whether on University premises or elsewhere, will be regarded as an act of misconduct under the University of Nottingham Code of Discipline for Students and may result in disciplinary proceedings being brought against them and dismissal from their degree.
Students are responsible for making themselves familiar with all codes, ordinances and regulations which affect them.
