Expertise Summary

BA(hons), 2003 MA(Cantab), University of Cambridge 2007

MA, University of Nottingham 2016

PhD, University of Nottingham 2020

I specialise in professional communication including the language associated with sustainable business and equality, diversity and inclusion in workplaces. I lead a Knowledge Transfer Partnership between University of Nottingham and law firm, Browne Jacobson LLP. This involves applying academic research principles and methodologies to enhance communication and inclusion in a professional workplace and, vice versa, considering the real-world priorities and implications of sociolinguistic research.

I worked as a Research Fellow on a number of linguistics and sociolinguistics projects between 2017 and 2023 at University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University, including investigations of healthcare messaging, public health campaigns, recruitment language and workplace communication during the Covid-19 pandemic. I have also provided consultancy services to SMEs and collaborated with colleagues to produce training courses for students and staff on street harassment and consent.

Prior to completing my MA and PhD, I worked as a Solicitor for a City law firm and for an international financial services firm, and taught law for the Open University.

Research Summary

I am currently leading a 30-month project (March 2023 - September 2025) as Knowledge Transfer Partnership Associate with Browne Jacobson LLP.
