Garsington Manor and the Emergence of English Literary Modernism: A Cultural Biography
Research Summary
The aim of my research is to create a cultural biography of Garsington Manor, from 1915-1918, and ask how it was significant in the cultural formation of Modernism. Specifically, I will be examining the beginning of a cultural movement via the relationships formed and the emergence of a collective artistic style by focusing on three main research questions:
- How did the lived experience of Garsington shape the literature it produced and the formation of modernism more broadly?
- In what ways might the early formation of modernism be examined as a cultural experience, lived and shared by groups and coteries?
- How do the cultural contexts of modernism affect an analysis of its literary styles?
Research Interests
My research interests largely focus on early twentieth century literature, especially Modernism, with specific attention to its formation and construction. I have particular interest in D.H. Lawrence, Virginia Woolf, and Katherine Mansfield but am very interested in examining how various writers and artists influenced one another and contributed to an overall literary movement.
