Research Topic

Interpreting the Exeter Book riddles in the context of reform

Research Summary

The Benedictine Reform was established to standardise certain elements of monasticism by adopting the Rule of Saint Benedict . It also aimed to improve literacy and learning in the monastic institutions of England in the mid-to-late tenth century. This period saw an acceleration in text production in the vernacular including the compilation of the Exeter codex (Exeter Cathedral Library, MS 3501). My research examines how the ninety-five riddles of the Exeter Book were received and interpreted within this context of Reform.
