Biography

Antonia is an Assistant Professor in the School of Geography. She was awarded a 1^st Class BSc in Physical Geography from the University of Nottingham 2005, an MSc in Quaternary Science from Royal Holloway University of London in 2006 and a PhD in palaeolimnology from Loughborough University in 2012. Antonia joined Keele University in 2012 as a part-time Teaching Fellow in Geography, becoming a Lecturer in 2019 and a Senior Lecturer in 2022. She was Programme Director for the BSc Physical Geography programme between 2020 - 2022 and Deputy Director of the Institute for Sustainable Futures. Antonia is a Fellow of the Higher Education and has a PGCert in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education.

Current Research

Antonia is an aquatic scientist, and her research focuses on one of the biggest environmental challenges facing society today; the impact of anthropogenic activity, including climate change and pollution, on freshwater systems. She uses a range of limnological and palaeolimnological techniques to understand how lake systems have changed in response to environmental and anthropogenic stressors over different timescales, from the past through to the present day.

Her research aims to address freshwater environmental science research priorities and is centered around three projects:

1) Interactions between emerging anthropogenic contaminants (i.e., plastics, pollutants and pharmaceuticals) and lake ecosystems;

2) Unravelling the environmental controls of newly emerging proglacial lake ecosystems;

3) Understanding the impact of climate change on lake ecosystems and ontogeny trends.
