Biography

After graduating in 1995 with a degree in Social and Cultural Studies from the University of Nottingham I began my career working with looked after children and then moved onto working with the homeless, particularly women and children. Following this I worked within a public heath project supporting teenage parents and pregnant young women. Through this work I developed a passion for healthcare and health promotion and decided to embark on a Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing which I completed in 2007. On qualification I worked on an elderly rehabilitation ward for a year and then moved onto an emergency admissions ward where I worked for 7 years as a staff nurse and deputy sister. Working with students during this time I realised that I loved teaching and secured a permanent post as a Teaching Associate in the School of Health Sciences in February 2016, receiving promotion to Assistant Professor in 2020. I am currently module leader for a year one clinical learning module and Deputy Lead for Safeguarding.

Expertise Summary

I have a strong clinical background within medical nursing, caring for patients with a range of both physical and mental health conditions. I have an interest in the unique skills required of acute nurses and in emotional resilience. My public sector experience also equipped me with extensive public heath and heath promotion skills and knowledge. For my Masters in Nursing I completed primary research around care of people with dementia in acute environments and I am currently studying for my doctorate investigating the continued low number of men entering the nursing profession. I have an interest in nursing workforce issues and have acted as an advisor to NHS England around recruitment challenges.
