Biography
Maria was a midwifery student at the University of Nottingham between 1999-2002. Maria registered as midwife in 2002. Clinical work included working in the acute hospital setting rotating between the antenatal postnatal wards and delivering intrapartum care to women and their babies.
Maria joined the University of Nottingham in 2008 as a Lecturer Practitioner until becoming a full time teaching associate in 2013. Maria progressed to an Assistant Professor role in 2016 and Associate Professor since 2023
School roles include the Admissions Lead for midwifery from 2017 until September 2020. Maria has lead on the Compassionate and Professional midwife course in year one since 2015. Maria is the Module Lead for the Childbirth Continuum for the Academic year 23/24. Maria contributes to the teaching and assessing on year two and three of the midwifery course.
Maria is the School of Health Sciences Quality Assurance Lead and the Official Correspondent to the Nursing and Midwifery Council since 2020. Maria is the midwifery Senior Tutor.

Research Summary
2015-2021
Maria commenced the Professional Education Doctorate (EdD) in October 2015 with the School of Education at the University of Nottingham. Maria's research interest pertains to educating student midwives about and for compassion. Maria successfully completed her professional education doctorate in November 2021.
My teaching is centered on my evolving practice developed through twenty one years as a midwife and educator. I aim to enhance and transform the student learning experience with the belief that midwifery learning is recursive. Learning starts with the students' varied experiences they bring with them onto the course. Each course within the BSc (Hons) Midwifery aims to prepare students for professional practice and build their confidence to lead, change and make their individual contribution to the midwifery profession. Midwifery learning should be active and premised on authentic midwifery scenarios. Clinical practice enhances and consolidates students' learning.
My professional and research focus is on how we educate healthcare professionals about and for compassion in healthcare.
