My research group works at the interface of neuropharmacology and bioengineering. We are interested in glial cell mechanosensitivity and how changes in the mechanical properties of brain tissue may contribute to glial cell reactivity.
We aim to identify novel drug targets for currently incurable conditions of the brain and spinal cord, such as Alzheimer's disease, multiple sclerosis and cancer-related cognitive impairment.
In particular, we study how ageing and neuroinflammation can disrupt the biochemistry and mechanobiology of astrocytes, microglia, and myelin-forming oligodendrocytes. Our goal is to better understand how glial pathologies impact synaptic plasticity in key areas of the brain involved in learning and memory formation.
