My group studies the genetic control of blood vessel formation and function, primarily using zebrafish, with a focus on regulation of angiogenesis and vascular integrity by cell signalling. We also study how cell signalling is disrupted during cardiovascular disease and how this contributes to endothelial dysfunction. We are interested in how endothelial cells (ECs) are organised into vascular networks, how cellular rearrangements are controlled during angiogenesis, how ECs interpret positional information and what the signals involved are. Of these signals, we are particularly interested in how Ca2+ oscillations are interpreted by ECs and how these control distinct aspects of EC physiology during angiogenesis and vascular integrity. My group has developed tissue-specific CRISPR interference in zebrafish to conditionally modulate gene expression and interrogate the signals and pathways involved. We are developing this approach to establish the zebrafish as a platform for tissue specific screening of gene function in vivo.
