At the age of 15 he was told he didn't have the qualifications to become a scientist. Today Sir Peter Mansfield, from The University of Nottingham, holds a Nobel Prize for Physiology and Medicine for his role in the development of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).

1.3m EPSRC grant enables large scale graphene production at Nottingham

University Staff Oscar

Description
The School is proud to annouce that Julie Kenney has been awarded the 2013 University Staff Oscar for the Best member of support staff - School/Department. Staff Oscars are awarded by the Students Union based on nominations made by students. Julie will be presented with this richly deserved award at an event on 2 May 2013.

Nottingham MRI Physicists shed new light brain nerve fibres

Description
World-leading experts in Magnetic Resonance Imaging from the School's Sir Peter Mansfield Magnetic Resonance Centre have made a key discovery which could give the medical world a new tool for the improved diagnosis and monitoring of neuro-degenerative diseases like multiple sclerosis.

Honoured at the 2012 Human-Competitive awards

Description
In an effort to make scanning probe microscopy a more effective and efficient technique, Dr. Richard Woolley and collaborators from the Nanoscience group, Computer Science (UoN) and the Beckman Institute (Illinois) were honoured with the Silver Humies award for human-competitive results in evolutionary and genetic programming.

Quantum Dot Day 2013

Description
The School is to host the latest in a series of prestigious workshops on semiconductor quantum dots. The meeting, slated for 10 january 2013, will cover the physics, materials science and device applications of these important structures.
