Research Topic Title

The responsible abuse of pleasure: Understanding gay mens' experiences of chemsex

Research Summary

This study seeks to foreground explanations for the chemsex phenomenon that resist the standard psycho-pathologising discourses that occur when gay men 'misbehave' (Halperin, 2007). As such, it will seek to investigate whether the non-pathologising rationales given in the literature bear out in the lived experiences of gay men who practice chemsex. It will also seek to explore what other meanings the men ascribe to their practice for themselves.
