INNOVATE Launch

The IAT’s Marie Curie Innovative Doctoral Programme (INNOVATE) was formally launched at The University of Nottingham on April 10th and 11th.

INNOVATE - The Integration of Novel Aerospace Technologies research project - brings together doctoral students from around the world with 14 industrial partners led by The University of Nottingham’s Institute for Aerospace Technology. It is a €3.8m Marie Curie Innovative Doctoral Programme funded by the EU, which adopts a multi-disciplinary approach to look at the whole air transportation system. It does so through investigation of the core technologies which will reduce the environmental impact of air travel through increased efficiency, therefore creating a blueprint for tomorrow’s air transportation system.

The event, organised by the INNOVATE project team themselves, saw representatives attend from the industrial partners, such as Rolls Royce, Avio, Airbus, Sintef, Airlight Energy, Nafems and Cenaero. Each INNOVATE member will spend at least six months on placement in industry as part of their PhD.

Attendees of the event were introduced to the individual research streams within the INNOVATE project, and were treated to an exhibition of the team’s fixed wing UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle), ‘Explorer’, and their multi-rotor UAV, ‘Bumblebee’.

On the second day of the event, the industrial partners were provided with the opportunity to visit some of the various facilities at The University of Nottingham which are currently being used by members of the INNOVATE team to develop their projects: the EPSRC Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Additive Manufacturing, NGI (the Nottingham Geospatial Institute), and the facilities available to the Power Electronics, Machines and Control Group.
