Since the beginning of 2014 The University of Nottingham’s Institute for Aerospace Technology has accelerated its campaign of international engagement, in particular in the Americas.
Following a successful visit to Brazil as part of the Vice Chancellor’s mission to Brazil in October 2013, links with Brazilian aircraft manufacturer EMBRAER and other industrial partners, research institutions such as The University of Campinas and ITA (Brazil's Technological Institute of Aeronautics), and various state funding agencies, have been created or reinforced. The engagement with Brazil supports the University’s broader vision for collaborative research in the region, led by the Research and Graduate Services and the International Office.
In May an IAT team visited Brazil to meet with ITA and various state and federal Universities with the intention of exploring complementary research activities between the institutions and The University of Nottingham. Moreover, meetings with key industrial partners in the region took place, whilst the team also had the opportunity to visit the national centre for bioethanol science and technology (CTBE). True to its multidisciplinary vocation and University-wide remit the mission team involved two members of the University’s Business Engagement and Innovation Services, three members of the Faculty of Engineering, and two members of the Faculty of Science.
Recently, a team aligned to the IAT travelled to the USA to meet with L-3 Communications and the United Technologies Research Centre. This visit saw the IAT support University meetings with the National Science Foundation and the UKTI (UK Trade and Investment) in Washington, whilst IAT academics also spent two days at Virginia Tech supporting the Faculty of Engineering’s engagement with the Virginian institution. Finally, the visit provided the opportunity for a constructive workshop at Rolls-Royce Corporation, Indianapolis, during which leading Nottingham academics Hervé Morvan and Dragos Axinte met their technical counterparts in the company.
