Contemporary Chinese Queer Performance

How do LGBTQ people in contemporary China perform their identities on stage, in everyday life and through social activism?

This is the first scholarly monograph dedicated to the study of queer theatre and performance in contemporary China.

This book examines queer music, photography, theatre and social activism to discern the pivotal role of performance in queer identity and community formation. It highlights the dramatic, theatrical and performative aspects of queer identity formation. Breaking away from textual forms of representation, this book pinpoints the importance of the body for queer political, social and cultural life. The book contributes to theatre and performance studies, art history, media and cultural studies, sociology, anthropology and political theory.

Since childhood, I have been fascinated by theatre and performance, which can take me to a different world and live a different life. What does this have to do with my identity? What is queer about theatre and performance? This book is my answer to these questions. It captures my passion for all things theatrical, dramatic and queer.
