Our past and present students share their experiences of student life, including the transition to university and making friends.
"University life is quite different to school, you're a lot more independent. It’s more challenging than A Levels as you need to manage your own workload whereas at school, you’re told exactly what to do and when it needs to be in by."

"The transition to uni life was a big difference for me. I’ve definitely grown as a person over my first year and a half, I look after myself better, practice self-care and I feel that I’m in a healthier mood that I was at home."
"People always tell you that the transition to uni life is hard and I found that was definitely true for me. But once I started easing myself into it the process things became much easier mostly due to an amazing support network."
"I'm the president of Mussoc, the Music Society. I've been a concert manager for the wind orchestra, too. Then there's Musicality (the musical theatre society), I play in their pit bands for their shows. I'm also involved with the radio station, URN. My CV is so full because of stuff I’ve learnt at uni."
"Student life was amazing. I loved it. I was very keen racquet sport player and played in the squash league. I was also captain of the hockey team for the halls. I’m still in touch with some of the people I played squash with."
"I was in Revival Gospel Choir. I was also team leader for one of the events teams for the Christian Union. I gave it a go and then loved it. And that’s been what I’ve gone on to do since leaving uni. It was the perfect training ground."
"By joining a society you’ll find people who you have something in common with and who share interests with you. I've made lifelong friends and felt most comfortable at The Boat Club."
"I initially found the degree quite overwhelming but I made some incredible friends. I definitely felt like I stuck out at the beginning but the course had some really lovely people on it and we bonded over essays and deadlines!"
"Philosophy seminars have to be one of the best places to make friends! What else brings people together like heated debates on consequentialism or banning doping in sports? I was also a part of several societies."
"I didn't feel fully prepared when I started uni and felt a bit lost."
"My mental health at university has definitely been up and down but I have a great support team here at UoN."
"Balancing sport and my studies can be tricky. But luckily, swimming falls outside of academic hours.
