The slide collection

The DTH houses a collection of more than 80,000 35mm slides which are available to all staff and students. The main body of the collection comprises fine art ranging from early Renaissance to contemporary and is divided into the national schools:

  • American
  • British
  • French
  • German
  • Italian
  • Netherlands
  • Russian
  • Spanish

There is also a large architecture collection. It includes photographs, plans and models of buildings from the Ancient world up to the late 20th century. It can be searched by building or by architect.

The Sculpture/3D section covers everything from Ancient statuary to contemporary installation, the photography section runs from the onset of photography as an artform in the 19th century up to recent work, and there is also a sizeable selection of medieval manuscripts. There are also a number of smaller sections devoted to specialist areas including ceramics, jewellery, furniture and furnishings, stained glass, maps and tapestries, to name but a few.

Slides can be used in the DTH, where they may be viewed on lightboxes. They may be scanned and digital versions produced (copyright permitting), using one of the three flatbed scanners with transparency units and can also be used to scan 35mm film.

Slides may also be borrowed and we have carousel slide projectors for loan by prior arrangement.
