The NottICL group at the University of Nottingham, led by Professor Nina Hatch, is working to gain a greater understanding of the intracluster light (ICL) within groups and clusters of galaxies across cosmic time. Our group takes a multi-faceted approach to address the challenges of observing and characterizing this diffuse light using both state-of-the art observations from
ESA's
Euclid space telescope and high resolution simulations (including from the
300 project). By studying the diffuse ICL we aim to answer a variety of questions, including: when does ICL first appear? what formation mechanisms result in the ICL observed at low redshift? how does the ICL relate to the cluster's underlying dark matter halo? In addition to our work on the ICL, our group members also work on projects related to the galaxy populations within galaxy clusters, and the properties of those clusters across a large range in redshift.
