Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Doctoral Training Programme

Mercedes's research

To develop a cellular model of triple negative breast cancer (TNBC).

My research project is exciting because it combines the areas I am mostly interested in - disease modelling, iPSC, CRISPR and molecular biology. TNBC is a type of cancer that is usually more aggressive and harder to treat than other types of breast cancer. To be working on something that could improve the life expectancy of people with this disease truly motivates me.

The best part about studying a PhD is to finally feel like I am contributing in some way to generate important knowledge for the scientific world.

After obtaining a bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology, I spent six months doing a placement at a research center, followed by a master’s degree in Biotechnology. I worked for a startup, which aimed to diagnose mental health disorders by measuring biological markers. Despite loving my job and the impact it had on people, I missed working in the lab and producing the scientific data myself. Hence, I decided to apply for a PhD to continue my academic journey.

Being part of the DTP is like being part of a community. We are going through the same stages of our PhD, so we are like friends who support each other. This DTP is unique as it prepares us for different careers paths, not just industry or academia.

Mercedes

The DTP team of academics and staff is very helpful and always there to offer support.

After my PhD I want to work in industry in the research and development department, preferably with the health sector. I believe this program will help me achieve this goal, because we are trained in the required technical and transferable skills.
