Jonathan Beaverstock
Jonathan is currently Professor of International Management at the University of Bristol, having previously been the Chair of Economic Geography and Academic Champion of the ‘Integrating Global Society’ Research and Knowledge Transfer Priority Group at the University of Nottingham, U.K.. Prior to this, he was Professor and Head of the School of Geography at Loughborough University.
For over 20 years, Jonathan’s research has focused on the competitiveness of global financial centres and the internationalisation of banking and professional service firms. He has undertaken research projects in the City of London, and the financial districts of New York, Paris, Frankfurt, Amsterdam and Singapore, funded by the ESRC, British Academy and Leverhulme Trust. His research has informed Government and professional and trade bodies, and the work he published on, ‘Financial Services Clustering and its Significance for London’ and ‘Comparing London and Frankfurt as World Cities’ was highly acclaimed, and used as evidence in the H M Treasury’s five economic tests to assess the UK’s preparations to join the Euro in 2003, and the recent Vicker’s Report on the proposed separation of wholesale and retail banking. He has published widely in books and journals, like Environment and Planning A, Journal of Economic Geography and Regional Studies, and he regularly presents Key Note addresses on the international conference circuit
Current research is focused on the high net individual market (the super-rich) in retail financial and professional services, and the growth and proliferation of the global private wealth management market, particularly in London, Singapore and Hong Kong.
Jonathan is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences (FAcSS) and has held visiting professorships at the National University of Singapore, the University of Otago, Gent University and the University of Western Sydney. Jonathan is currently a Visiting Professor at Loughborough University's School of Civil and Building Engineering
Alan Brener - Senior Associate
Alan is currently on secondment from Santander UK working for Sir Richard Lambert helping to set up the Banking Standards Council. He has worked at Santander UK since 2005 covering, at various times, compliance, regulatory policy, retail legal and improving customer service. Prior to this Alan worked for NatWest/RBS as Director of Compliance for the retail banking business.
He has been an insurance prudential and conduct regulator and in the later 1980's worked at the Department of Trade and Industry in a range of areas including: appraising inward investment projects, assisting with privatisations and as a private secretary.
Alan was called to the Bar but never practiced instead going into the commercial world as a Chartered Accountant.
Alan is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Banking in Scotland and has studied economics and foreign policy at Columbia University in New York and is in the process of obtaining a Law Masters degree (banking law, regulation of financial markets, corporate governance) from his alma mater: University College London.
Nigel Brigden - Senior Associate
Nigel is a highly qualified and experienced banker with an in-depth understanding of all aspects of banking obtained during a career lasting over 40 years, with excellent contacts throughout the City of London.
He is currently working on a part time basis as a Consultant at a Trade Association in the City involved in responding to the government’s proposals for the new Payments Regulator.
Prior to that he was Senior Vice President & Head of Operations at an Overseas Bank with responsibility for Information Technology, Trade Finance, Treasury Settlements, Securities Back Office, Retail Back Office, and Correspondent Banking.
He is a Fellow of Chartered Banker Institute and a Fellow of Chartered Institute of Bankers.
He also obtained an MSc – Computer Science (1996 – 2000) from the University of Liverpool.
Dr John Coetzee - Senior Associate
Dr Johan Coetzee is a senior lecturer in banking and Deputy Chairperson in the Department of Economics at the University of the Free State (UFS) in South Africa. He obtained his PhD in Economics from the UFS in 2010 and an MBA (Chartered Banker) from the University of Bangor in Wales in 2013. His research interests are interdisciplinary, focusing on financial services marketing, risk management and bank management. Recent publications have dealt with the management of the bank-client relationship in its various forms and his research has been published in both South African and international journals.
For six years he worked at Nedbank in various positions: initially in the Retail Banking Division as a branch manager, and later as an analyst in the Sovereign and Institutions Risk Unit in the Corporate Credit Division. In recent years Johan has served on the external Advisory Board for the School of Investment and Banking at the Milpark Business School in Cape Town and has been an external course evaluator and presenter in the Risk Management programme at the South African Reserve Bank’s Academy for the training of central bankers.
From a teaching point of view, he teaches business conditions analysis in the MBA programme at the UFS Business School and financial risk management at the Department of Economics. Since 2008, he has been a visiting external senior lecturer in the financial risk management programme at the Salzburg University of Applied Sciences in Austria, and more recently, at the Kufstein University of Applied Sciences in the field of portfolio management.
After being awarded the Top Emerging Researcher award by the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences at the UFS in 2010 and 2013, Johan was the editor and main contributor to a book published in 2016 based on the South African banking industry entitled “Bank Management in South Africa: A risk-based perspective.” This book is prescribed for banking programmes by several universities in South Africa. He is also a member of the Economics Society of South Africa and the Chartered Institute of Bankers in Scotland, where he has recently been enlisted to be a mentor in the Chartered Banker Institute Mentoring Programme.
Steve Diacon - Senior Associate
Stephen joined the School in October 1975 after completing a joint honours BSc in Mathematics and Economics, and doctoral research on the UK life insurance market. He was appointed to a chair in 1999.
Stephen's research interests cover a wide range of issues concerned with Crisis, Risk, Insurance and Saving behaviour, including the economics of risk and insurance, insurance company performance, corporate risk management, personal savings and financial markets, and individual risk attitudes and perceptions. His teaching is mainly focussed on insurance and corporate risk management.
Hooman Estelami - Senior Associate
Hooman is a professor of marketing at the Gabelli School of Business, Fordham University in New York. He is the author of five books: Marketing Financial Services; Marketing Turnarounds; Frontiers of Distance Learning in Business Education; Predictors of Victory and Injury in Mixed Martial Arts Combat; The Routledge Companion to Financial Services Marketing.
He is the joint editor of the International Journal of Bank Marketing, and previously served as the associate editor of the Journal of Product and Brand Management. His areas of specialization are financial services marketing, pricing, customer service management, and distance education. He has received multiple awards for his teaching and research. He received his PhD in marketing from Columbia University and his MBA from McGill University.
Hooman's research has appeared in a wide range of journals including: International Journal of Research in Marketing, Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, Journal of Consumer Behaviour, Journal of Financial Services Marketing, Journal of Retailing, Journal of Business Research, Journal of Service Research, Journal of Product and Brand Management, International Journal of Bank Marketing, Journal of Promotion Management, Journal of Marketing Education, and Marketing Education Review. Jillian Farquhar - Senior Associate
Jillian Farquhar is professor of management at London Metropolitan University, where she leads the Business doctoral programme. She has worked at a number of universities where she has taken a lead role in developing research capacity in business and management. She edited the International Journal of Bank Marketing for seven years, developing it as a key disseminator of academic and practitioner research in financial services marketing. She also co-authored the Marketing of Financial Services published by Palgrave and co-wrote a chapter in The Routledge Companion to Financial Services Marketing.
Her research interests include marketing strategy, in particular branding and stakeholders, demarketing and case study research. A winner of awards, such as the Academy of Marketing Research Initiative, she has presented her work across the world. Current projects include payday lending, vulnerable consumers and case study research rigour.

His background is in applied microeconomics, particularly in relation to the interaction between law, health, and insurance. He has written or edited four books and numerous articles on the general themes of liability insurance, medical negligence, and the economics of the legal services market.
His research into the legal costs of personal injury claims was influential in determining the eventual structure of the Fixed Recoverable Costs Scheme (FRCS) for low value motor accident claims that was introduced as a culmination of the Civil Justice Council’s mediation process involving claimant solicitors and defendant insurers. He was also involved in research on appropriate levels for success fees in Conditional Fee Arrangements, and was subsequently asked by the Ministry of Justice to undertake a review of the FRCS, and, more recently the RTA Portal process. He was one of seven Assessors assisting Lord Justice Jackson in his Review of Civil Litigation Costs and is an advisory member of the Civil Justice Council’s Costs Committee.

Stephen Fletcher - Senior Associate
Stephen is Managing Director, Risk and Remediation for Coutts in the UK. Stephen is responsible for regulatory relationships, with particular responsibility for Past Business Reviews.
Stephen’s key responsibility in 2014 is a Past Business Review of all live Investment Management business for Coutts.
Stephen has been with Coutts for 9 years in various roles, joining as Head of Commercial Banking, moving to Marketing Director, then Head of Private Banking, before becoming Chief Operating Officer in 2011. In his role as COO, Stephen was involved with the change programmes for RDR, Conduct Risk and AML.
Stephen also acts as Board Chairman for Adam & Company (International) and Coutts Finance Company.
Prior to Coutts, Stephen was with RBS Group undertaking various senior roles in Retail and Corporate Banking.
David Goddard - Senior Associate
David is Head of Credit Strategy, TSB.
David has worked in banking for 32 years, having also worked in management consultancy and outsourcing. His experience in banking covers the retail, commercial, international and private banking sectors and he has worked at a senior level in the risk, HR and business management functions. Most recently he has held a head of function role in the Risk area of the re-launched TSB bank.
The bulk of David’s 20 years in senior management positions has been spent in risk and learning related roles, and he has knowledge in depth around the practical aspects of developing real capability in the banking industry. This experience is supplemented by his activities with providers of professional qualifications; specifically as a technical risk advisor to the Chartered Institute of Securities and investments and as a tutor with the Institute for Financial Services.
David graduated in Law from the University of Bristol.
Aside from an on-going passion for improving the way that the banking industry develops its people, David also has a strong interest in people risk management and how organisations, legislators and regulators are developing their understanding of this critical area.
Max Hall - Senior Associate
Professor Hall graduated with a first class honours degree in Economics from Nottingham University in 1975. He received a PhD. from the same university in 1978. He joined the staff of the Economics Department at Loughborough University in 1977 and is currently a Professor (of Banking and Financial Regulation). Professor Hall has published nine books (one co-authored) in the areas of money, banking and financial regulation, and acted as Managing Editor for a further two books including ‘The Regulation and Supervision of Banks’ (4 volumes) published by Edward Elgar in July 2001. Professor Hall has also contributed over 100 articles to academic and business journals, including the Journal of Banking and Finance, Expert Systems With Applications, European Financial Management, the Journal of International Financial Markets, Institutions and Money, and the Review of Quantitative Finance and Accounting, and chapters to a further 13 books.
In addition, he has three entries in the New Palgrave Dictionary of Money and Finance published by Macmillan in 1992. Professor Hall has carried out a number of consultancy projects for public and private sector organisations and has contributed to the Top Management Programme run by the Cabinet Office. He has also delivered over 160 papers at conferences around the world, including ones organised by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, the Bank of England, the United Nations, the European Commission, the People’s Bank of China, Bank Indonesia and the Nagoya Stock Exchange. He has also acted in an advisory capacity to the central banks of Barbados, Indonesia, Japan, Macau, Pakistan and the People’s Republic of China.
Apart from teaching at Loughborough University, Professor Hall has held visiting lectureships at Birmingham University, Leicester University, Nottingham University, Sheffield University (Management School), City University Business School, Malta University and the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (London office). He has also acted as an External Examiner at Derby University, Manchester University Business School, Sheffield University (City College, Thessaloniki) and the European Business School (London).
Over the years, Professor Hall has been awarded research grants by the Bank of England, the British Academy, the British Council, the Caisse des Depots et Consignations, the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation, the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, the Nuffield Foundation and the Hong Kong Institute for Monetary Research.
Tina Harrison - Senior Associate
Dr. Tina Harrison is Senior Lecturer in Marketing at the University of Edinburgh Business School, Scotland, UK. She is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Financial Services Marketing, author of Financial Services Marketing (Prentice-Hall), co-editor of The Routledge Companion to Financial Services Marketing (Routledge), and editor of a series of online talks in Financial Services Marketing (Henry Stewart).
Her research interests encompass marketing and consumption of financial services, including segmentation, relationships and retention, pensions and the Internet. She has led several research projects on these topics with funding from financial institutions and research councils, including a large scale three-year project on pensions and the internet funded by the UK’s Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and a two-year ESRC-funded seminar series on the topic of Financial Services and the Consumer: Challenges and Issues in a Context of Change.
She has also conducted a wide range of consultancy projects for financial institutions. Her research has been presented at conferences and published widely in leading international journals.
Arvid Hoffmann
Dr. Arvid Hoffmann is Professor of Marketing at the University of Adelaide Business School. He is a research fellow at the Network for Studies on Pensions, Aging, and Retirement (Netspar) and has been visiting scholar at the Leavey School of Business (Santa Clara University), Aalto University School of Business, the Foster School of Business (University of Washington), and the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW). Arvid holds a PhD in Economics and Business from the University of Groningen.
Arvid’s research interests are interdisciplinary and bridge the fields of marketing and finance. In particular, he is interested in behavioral finance, consumer financial decision-making, financial services marketing, household finance, individual investor behavior, and personal finance. By integrating theories and methods from marketing as well as finance, he aims to better understand how individuals make financial decisions, such as investment choices. Through his research, Arvid intends to inform public policy makers and practitioners on how to “debias” individuals and improve their financial decision-making through smart defaults, nudges, or primes. Arvid has experience advising financial institutions in both Europe and the United States.
Arvid publishes his research in such journals as the Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, the International Journal of Research in Marketing, the Journal of Business Research, the Journal of Banking and Finance, the Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization, and Theory and Decision. Markus is Chief Risk Officer (Interim), UK Municipal Bonds Agency.
He is a seasoned risk specialist with more than 20 years' experience in global financial markets, particularly in ratings, structured finance and credit risk - with increasing research interests in people risk, regulatory compliance, operational, conduct, systemic risks and cyber security.
He has worked on many high-profile projects with some of the world's largest financial institutions, multinational development agencies and governments.

John Needham - Senior Associate
John Needham is Head of Regulatory Design at The Royal Bank of Scotland, John is responsible for leading the design and planning of any changes required by the Group to ensure compliance with significant regulatory requirements such as Resolution Planning, and the Independent Commission on Banking (ICB).
John has been with the RBS Group for over 36 years. During this time, he has gained extensive experience of branch and back office operations, audit, risk, change management and relationship management.
John is currently President and a Fellow of the Chartered Banker Institute and has an MBA from the University of Strathclyde Business School.
Jonas Nilsson - Senior Associate
Jonas Nilsson is currently senior lecturer in marketing at the School of Business, Economics and Law at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden. He finished his PhD at Umeå University in 2010, and obtained an MSc from Stockholm University in 2002.
Jonas has focused much of his research on sustainability in the financial services context; particularly on so called socially responsible investment (SRI) initiatives. He has written several papers and book chapters on how consumers integrate their social, environmental, and ethical values into their investment decisions.
His work on this topic has appeared in journals such as the Journal of Business Ethics, International Journal of Bank Marketing, Journal of Financial Services Marketing, as well as in books such as the Cambridge Handbook of institutional Investment and Fiduciary Duty, the Routledge Companion to Financial Services Marketing, and the forthcoming Routledge Handbook of Responsible Investment. Jonas also serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Financial Marketing.
Chris O'Brien - Senior Associate
Chris joined the Business School in 2000 and specialises in teaching and research in risk management and insurance. Chris has been a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries since 1975 and is an Associate of the Society of Actuaries. Prior to moving to Nottingham he worked for Royal & Sun Alliance, where he was Chief Actuary of the UK Life Division. He has been President of the Manchester Actuarial Society and Chairman of the Liverpool Economic and Statistical Society. Chris is and has been a member of a number of committees and working parties of the actuarial profession. He has appeared as a witness before the Treasury Committee.
His research at Nottingham has included projects funded by the UK actuarial profession (on general insurance reserving and mortality perceptions), ABN Amro (on closed life funds) and the Policyholder Advocate in the Aviva reattribution (on equity between policyholders and shareholders). As Director of the Centre for Risk and Insurance Studies at the School from 2000-13 he was responsible for organising and promoting the Centre’s work.
His research interests are: Management, performance measurement and regulation of insurance companies; accounting, risk and insurance; pensions and annuities; risk management generally and with specific reference to insurance companies.
Phil Orford - Senior Associate
Phil Orford MBE, Chief Executive of the Forum of Private Business.
Phil began his career in sales before starting his own business at the age of 21. Between 1983 and 2007, he started and grew a number of businesses as diverse as scientific supplies and hazardous waste management.
Passionate about supporting the small and medium-sized business sector, which Phil believes is the backbone of the UK economy, he believes in the need for the right balance of freedom, intervention and support to enable entrepreneurs to innovate and grow.
Since joining the Forum of Private Business in February 2008, Phil has guided the company and its members through a difficult credit crisis and recession. Patrick Ring - Senior Associate
Dr Patrick Ring is a Senior Lecturer at Glasgow Caledonian University. He is a qualified solicitor who has worked in corporate private practice as well as in the insurance industry, where he provided legal advice on pensions and regulation and managed a team of solicitors.
Patrick’s main teaching responsibilities relate to financial regulation, pensions and retail financial services, risk, and European financial services. He has led programme development at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, with a particular focus on industry liaison and partnership.
His current research interests include pension policy and reform, regulation of financial services, risk and trust in financial services, and issues facing retail financial services consumers. He has written extensively in these areas, and has published widely in journals such as Journal of Social Policy, Economy and Society, Journal of Financial Regulation and Compliance, Critical Social Policy and Journal of Risk Research.
Patrick has made a number of radio and TV appearances discussing topical issues concerning financial services, and particularly pensions. He holds several External Examiner posts and serves on the council or committee of a number of financial services-related industry bodies. He is a regular speaker at national and international financial services-related and social policy conferences.
Julie Robson - Senior Associate
Dr Julie Robson is Senior Principal Academic at Bournemouth University and specialises in financial services marketing. Her interest in this area started with her PhD on the marketing strategies of building societies. A career in the insurance industry then followed, where she worked in a range of management roles including marketing, new product development and research.During this time she helped to develop several professional groups including the General Insurance Market Research Association (MRS) and the Financial Services Marketing Group (CIM). On returning to academia, Julie's research has been extended to include marketing within the banking, financial advice, payday loans and Islamic finance sectors.
Julie has secured grants from the ESRC and HEIF to support this work. Julie is on the editorial board of the International Journal of Bank Marketing and has presented her work at academic and practitioner events in both the UK and overseas. Julie is based at Bournemouth University where she has been Associate Dean, Director of Enterprise and Head of Department, Strategy and Marketing within the Business School.
Julie is currently Chair of the Qualifications Examination and Assessments Committee of the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII), an advisor to the Chartered Institute of Loss Adjusters Examination Committee and a past President of the Bournemouth Insurance Institute. Her current teaching includes Financial Services Marketing on the MBA; she also supervises doctoral students, particularly in the area of financial services marketing.
Nickolaos G. Tzeremes - Senior Associate
Nickolaos is Associate Professor of Economic Analysis in the Department of Economics at University of Thessaly, Greece. He holds a BSc in Business Information Technology, Leeds Metropolitan University; MBA in International Business, Leeds University Business School (LUBS); and a PhD in Economics from University of Thessaly.
His research interest are: micro banking and finance, nonparametric analysis, production economics and efficiency analysis. Nickolaos is also a reviewer in many high quality academic journals.

Nigel Waite - Senior Associate
Nigel is a CEO, at the Canford Centre who specialises in corporate behaviour, marketing strategy and its implementation. He also has particular expertise as a researcher and commentator on areas concerning trust, fairness and value in the context of financial services. Nigel is the co-author of Financial Services Marketing: An International Guide to Principles and Practice. The second edition of this world-wide best seller was recently published.
Nigel spent over 20 years in commercial practice in marketing, sales and general management, including Marketing Director roles at Lloyds Banking Group and Barclays in which he was responsible for life assurance, pension, savings and investment products. In terms of General Management he has run businesses marketing unsecured loans, finance broker second mortgages and first mortgages.
He was the founder and, for 12 years, Director and of the Financial Services Research Forum and is Honorary Professor of Marketing at the University of Nottingham. Nigel is an Associate of the London-based Financial Inclusion Centre.
Bohui Wen - Senior Associate
Bohui Wen (mimiwenh@163.com) is Professor of Finance and Vice-principal in School of Finance at the Tianjin University of Finance and Economics, Tianjin, China. She obtained her PhD in Economics from Nankai University in 2010.
Buhui’s research interest is interdisciplinary that includes financial engineering, risk management and complex system. Professor Wen has been so far a principal investigator or co-researcher in eleven research projects.
Professor Wen’s research has appeared in a wide range of journals including: Journal of Financial Research, Finance & Trade Economics, Studies of International Finance, Archives of Control Sciences. She lectures Financial Derivatives, Risk Management and Mathematical Finance. Professor Wen is also the standing director of the Fintech Committee in Chinese Society of Technology Economics (CSTE)
Carolyn Williams - Senior Associate
Carolyn Williams is Director of Corporate Relations at the Institute of Risk Management, the leading international educational and training body for the risk management profession. She is responsible for communicating the work of the IRM to a variety of audiences and for building partnerships with risk teams.
She joined IRM in 2006 from Lloyd’s of London, where she was responsible most recently for training and communication for the Lloyd’s risk management team. This followed several years as Secretary to the Lloyd’s Regulatory and Market Boards and many years supporting various Lloyd’s committees and working parties through interesting times.
She has an MA in Politics, Philosophy and Economics from Oxford University, is a Chartered Insurance Risk Manager and also a Certified Member of the Institute of Risk Management.
Steve Worthington - Senior Associate
Steve Worthington is an Adjunct Professor at Swinburne University. He was previously Professor of Marketing at Monash University's Department of Marketing from 2002 to 2013, prior to which he worked at several universities in the United Kingdom and in executive roles at a UK bank and UK supermarket group. At Monash, Steve taught Strategic Marketing in the MBA program and Relationship Marketing and Marketing Financial Services in the Master of Marketing program.
His research interests are focused on the distribution of financial services, particularly through the channel of payment cards. These topics are of interest to both academics and practitioners. His paper Banking without the Bank, International Journal of Bank Marketing was ranked 12th highest downloaded article in 2012 (was 2nd most downloaded in 2011) and remains the 4th highest in terms of immediacy. This focused on the opportunities and challenges facing new entrants into the financial services market, particularly from brands such as Tesco Bank and Virgin Money.
Steve is a member of the Financial Services Institute of Australasia and of the Academic Standards Board of the International Academy of Retail Banking. He is also an associate of the Australian Centre for Financial Studies (ACFS) for whom he wrote a paper entitled, Regulatory Interventions and their Consequences in the Australian Payment Card System, which was published in October 2013.
