Get involved by leading a research project in our ‘Telling stories of the city using digital and data’ challenge theme, participating in the Nottingham Urban Room, and engaging with our digital tools for place-led change.

City as Lab is supporting researchers, communities and local partners to use or generate data to tell a new ‘story’ about Nottingham linked to a people-centred, place-based challenge. This can range from health, wellbeing, environment and transport to community life and culture.

Our goal is to tell diverse stories that shape understanding of the Nottingham city region for people, places and policymakers.

Projects must be led by a researcher based at the University of Nottingham with partner collaboration being a key criteria.

This year's call has now closed

The Nottingham Urban Room is a neutral space where people can come together to understand, debate and get involved in the past, present and future of Nottingham and the wider region.

Join our projects and events to develop meaningful connections, to help understand the city’s assets and challenges, and to influence the way Nottingham grows and prepares for the future.

Events are hosted and co-facilitated by Nottingham City Council and Universities for Nottingham.

Cities are rich sources for different categories of data: health, economic, social, environmental, demographic, and more. The City Data Connector curates information about data focused on Nottingham and the East Midlands in a way that encourages cross-disciplinary exploration and linkage.

If you would like to add your own dataset to the City Data Connector, or explore ways your data can be visualised using our award-winning digital tools, please contact us at: cityaslab@nottingham.ac.uk

The Projection Augmented Relief Model (PARM) has been developed by the University of Nottingham and offers a unique way of understanding places by connecting and lighting up data onto a physical model. The power of PARM is to visualise data in ways that people engage with, providing insights for researchers, communities, policymakers and business.
