Staff in the Department of American & Canadian Studies are celebrating after receiving a number of awards from the British Association for American Studies (BAAS). The awards ceremony took place during the Association's annual conference, which this year was held at the University of Exeter from April 18-21. Congratulations to the following winners:
Celeste-Marie Bernier, who won the BAAS Book Prize for Characters of Blood: Black Heroism in the Transatlantic Imagination (University of Virginia Press). This award is for the best book in American Studies published during 2012.
Vivien Miller, who received an Honourable Mention in the BAAS Book Prize category for Hard Labor and Hard Time: Florida's "Sunshine Prison" and Chain Gangs (University Press of Florida)
Graham Thompson, who received the Arthur Miller Centre Essay prize for "The 'Plain Facts' of Fine Paper in 'The Paradise of Bachelors and the Tartarus of Maids" published in the journal American Literature in 2012. This award is for the best journal length article on any American Studies topic published during 2012.
Paul McGarr, who received an Eccles Centre Visiting Fellowship to conduct research at the British Library during 2013.
Maria Ryan, who was appointed Visiting Fellow in US Studies, 2013-14 at the Institute of the Americas & University College London
