On Saturday 7 May 2016, the University’s Widening Participation team ran its first Family Discovery Day, inviting 11 local primary schools to University Park campus to experience a wealth of activities run by academic departments in the arts, humanities, social sciences and sciences. Pupils from local schools brought their families with them and the day was alive with all ages testing their knowledge and learning about different subjects.
This year staff and students from the Department of American and Canadian Studies ran an interactive game called “So, you think you know America?” Children and adults worked together to connect different cards, clues and questions about American music, film and television, literature, historical events, famous faces and buildings to places on a map of America. The aim of the day was to find out more about iconic people, places, sounds and sights and explore the full diversity of America. Overall, the day was a great opportunity for local families to visit the campus and see what the University has to offer.
