It is with great sadness we announce the death of Emeritus Professor Richard King.
Richard was a much loved and esteemed colleague in the Department of American and Canadian Studies. He passed away on 19 April at the age of eighty.
Richard was a stellar intellectual historian best known for his books, The Party of Eros, A Southern Renaissance, Civil Rights and the Idea of Freedom, Race, Culture, and the Intellectuals, and Arendt and America. He was also a wonderful talker and teacher, whose ability to make the most complex ideas comprehensible without being in any way reductive was hugely appreciated by both his students and colleagues. His gentle American Southern accent charmed all who met him. He leaves behind his wife, Charlotte Fallenius, and step-children, Tim and Christopher Rundle. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends. He will be greatly missed.
