The Faculty of Science and Faculty of Engineering at The University of Nottingham are allocating five Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) PhD studentships a year, initially for the next two years, to encourage cross-faculty collaboration in the area of complex systems and processes.
Complex systems and processes, or complexity science, aims to explore the emergent behaviour of physical systems by focusing on interconnections of the system components and systems architecture, rather than the individual components themselves. It represents a novel scientific approach across traditional discipline boundaries.
The relationship between the individual components of a system and the global behaviour of the system is fundamental within a wide range of application areas. Indeed, the growing significance of understanding and managing such systems means that Complexity Science is increasingly being recognised as a critical area across both the Science and Engineering disciplines.
The aim of this doctoral training grant (DTG) centre is to bring together expertise from both the science and engineering faculties to undertake ground breaking research on problems which, by their very nature, consist of highly complex systems.
The centre is seeking talented individuals who are willing and able to work across these disciplines in new and exciting application areas.
