Look out for tax refund phishing scams

Phishing 714x249

Students across the country have been targeted by a phishing scam from fraudsters claiming to be HMRC.

The emails use seemingly legitimate domains ('@uc.ac.uk') and branding, and offer the recipient a tax refund. These are fraudulent emails and you should never provide any of your personal details.

Financial Secretary to the Treasury, Mel Stride MP, said: “HMRC will never inform you about tax refunds by email, text or voicemail. If you receive one of these messages it is a scam. Do not click on any links in these messages, and forward them to HMRC’s phishing email address."

If you do receive any such emails, please forward them to phishing@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk and then delete them.

More advice on spotting a phishing email can be found on the IT Services webpages.
