Changes to student loan funding durations, 2021/22

Thursday, 13 May 2021
Due to the changes to the 2021/22 term dates, the duration of maintenance loans from the Student Loans Company will be extended from 31 weeks to 33 weeks.

As previously communicated, the 2021/22 Autumn Term will run from Monday 20 September until Friday 17 December, allowing for an extra week of induction to help familiarise students with any new health and safety rules on Campus. In addition, the start of the Summer Term will be moved to Tuesday 3 May to allow extra time for teaching and assessments, should it be required. This means that there will be an extra two weeks’ course duration, increasing the academic year from 31 weeks to 33.

This increase will be reflected in your maintenance loan entitlement from the Student Loans Company, who will provide loans for the extra two weeks of £67/week for students living with parents or £102/week for students living outside of London and not living with parents.

If you have already applied for funding for 2021/22, you will receive a new award letter from Student Finance with the increased entitlement. If you have not yet applied for 2021/22 funding, you will be able to see the new course dates as part of your application.

You will be able to choose how much loan you wish to take out and can amend this within the Student Loans Company portal.

Please remember that you are not required to pay back any of your loan until you graduate and your monthly repayments will be based on your earnings and not the total amount you borrow.

The tuition fee and tuition fee loan will not be increased to reflect the longer terms and will remain at £9,250 for home students on the majority of courses.
