The new Student Engagement Dashboard is being introduced to help staff identify students in need of academic or wellbeing support.
The results of last year’s student survey highlighted that many students would like staff to notice and act more quickly when they are beginning to struggle with their studies or general wellbeing. A lack of academic engagement can be a good indicator that a student is beginning to struggle but the advent of the pandemic and our focus on digital learning has made it harder for staff to identify students in need of support. With this in mind, we are introducing the Student Engagement Dashboard.
The dashboard compiles existing data pertaining to your use of digital learning tools to provide key members of academic and support staff with an overview of each student’s academic engagement.
If we notice a significant change in your levels of academic engagement, your personal tutor or a member of the Support and Wellbeing team may reach out to you with an offer of support. To account for individual preferences and differences in styles of study, your data will only ever be reviewed in the context of your own studies, and will not be compared to that of other students. There will be no judgement attached to an offer of support – merely an offer of help if you need it.
The dashboard will be used to support your welfare and will not impact your grades or assessments - it is intended as a wellbeing resource. If you are on a sponsored student visa it will also be used to support the monitoring requirements of UK Visas and Immigration.
The Student Engagement Dashboard was launched in the Faculty of Science on Monday 10 May and will be used in the remaining faculties from the beginning of the 2021/22 academic year. Students in the Faculty of Science have been contacted directly and students in the remaining faculties will receive more information at the beginning of the next academic year.
In the meantime, you can visit the Student Engagement webpage for more information about our data policy and for a comprehensive set of FAQs relating to the Student Engagement Dashboard.
The university’s privacy information reflects our use of student engagement data.
This dashboard is an exciting new step in improving the way that staff support the welfare of students at the university and we hope you’ll agree that it represents positive progress.
