The university has put together a programme of support for students facing financial challenges due to the cost-of-living crisis.
Students are among the groups most likely to be affected by the cost-of-living crisis. The university has compiled a package of financial and wellbeing support to help those who are most impacted by the cost of living.
"We know that the cost-of-living crisis will be causing a lot of anxiety for many students at our university. This support package will offer some financial reassurance and essential support for the most vulnerable in our community.” - Stephen McAuliffe, Deputy Registrar.
The support package includes two support funds – the Student Hardship Fund and the Student Crisis Fund. The Student Hardship Fund provides financial assistance towards living costs while the Student Crisis Fund offers interest-free loans to any student who is experiencing financial difficulties because of an unexpected change in their circumstances.
The package also includes initiatives that will help you keep costs down, including kitchen access around campus, free shower facilities, heated study spaces in university buildings, and an increase in free period products.
If you have any questions about the cost of living – or want to voice your concerns to senior university staff and local MPs – make sure you attend the Cost of Living Q&A hosted by your Students’ Union officers.

UoNSU Union Development Officer, Sultan Chaudhury, said: “Alongside our work with the university, we’ve been working with other students’ unions in lobbying the government for increased support for students, forming a report on the impact of the cost of living, and improving the access students have to essentials such as those available in the community cupboards. We encourage you to take advantage of the support offered by the university and the Students’ Union and contact us if there’s anything else you’re struggling with.”
