Wednesday, 04 November 2020
From Thursday 5 November to Wednesday 2 December, national restrictions are in force across England to help combat a rise in COVID-19 rates across the country.
The University will remain open
The Government has emphasised the importance of education and that schools and universities should remain open during this period to prioritise the wellbeing and long-term futures of students.
The University will remain open as now, and continue as planned with current research activities and our blended approach to teaching - in-person where it is safe to do so, and otherwise online.
Travel remains permitted for work and education purposes and you will still be able to access libraries, study spaces and campus services throughout the period. If you commute to Nottingham or elsewhere to access your education, you can continue to do so as it constitutes a 'reasonable excuse' under the restrictions.
Staff who work on campus will continue to be there to help you and essential services remain available. If you were planning to travel to Nottingham to study you can still do so.
You can review the Government guidelines for universities here and read our detailed FAQs. However, please remember the main messages for students shared by the Government:
- remain in your university or term-time accommodation, do not travel home
- do not travel anywhere if you have been asked to self-isolate or have COVID-19 symptoms
What is permitted?
Teaching and Learning
The University will remain open as now, and continue as planned with current research activities and our blended approach to teaching - in-person where it is safe to do so, and otherwise online. Travel remains permitted for work and education purposes.
Postgraduate Research
In line with the continuation of in-person teaching, current arrangements for postgraduate research students remain unchanged. Laboratory and field based research can continue, subject to the appropriate risk assessments being in place and COVID-19 measures being observed at all times.
Libraries and study facilities
Access to the libraries will remain unchanged. We are continually reviewing out Study Spaces to provide the best possible access for students. For the latest, visit the Libraries website.
Socialising
You can continue to socialise within your allocated household but the key message from the Government is that you should limit your contact with other people, and must not visit other households or meet other people with whom you do not live.
You can exercise, or visit outdoor public places, such as University campuses or public parks, with the people you live with, your support bubble, or one person from another household.
The University will be increasing campus-based events and entertainment as part of the Stay in to Save Lives campaign – please keep checking this page to find out the latest offers.
Catering in halls and on campus
There will be changes in the availability of catering facilities on campus in line with government restrictions with many of our cafes switching to offer takeaway services. Students in catered halls will still be able to eat in dining rooms, as long as they sit with their households.
Sports Activities
The University Sports Centres will close for the period, except for courses where sport is a key component and/or performance sport activities. You can still follow regular updates and online workouts on our website and on Facebook and make use of fitness trails on campus, as long as you keep to the rules about not mixing with others.
Transport
The Hopper bus service has been extended and will continue during the period to support students who need to travel onto campus to study.
Health and wellbeing
This period of further restrictions may prove challenging, and protecting your mental health and wellbeing remains our overriding priority. With that in mind we have increased our wellbeing offer. I urge you to make use of our resources and ensure you are getting the support you need, whatever that might be.
While at University, please be sure to also follow the Isolate, Notify, Test process if you, or anyone in your household develops symptoms or receives a positive COVID-19 test result.
Further information
We have increased the amount of information available on our webpages, including support for those in isolation, information on how to get a coronavirus test and a reminder of the process if you become ill.
Our COVID contact centre is available to you on 0115 748 7700 between 10am and 8pm Monday to Friday, 12noon and 4pm Saturday and Sunday.
Hands, Face, Space
In addition to the legal restrictions above, please continue to follow good practice in hand washing, wearing a face covering and maintaining social distancing.
Thank you to everyone who has observed the measures we have put in place as a University to limit the spread of the virus since the beginning of term. Within our student community the number of active cases of COVID-19 continues to decline, to less than 100 cases at the moment.
While this shows our COVID security measures are working, there is no room for complacency, please remember that we all have our part to play in limiting the spread of COVID-19 and protect our friends, our families and wider community.
