As you leave for the winter break there are lots of ways to make your Christmas a green one this year.
Save energy
Help the university reduce energy waste as much as possible whilst the campus is closed over the winter break. As well as actions taken behind the scenes to manage building heating, everyone has a responsibility to act sustainably to reduce our environmental impact and help meet our carbon reduction goals.
Before you leave your accommodation – whether on or off campus – be sure to:
1. Power down any equipment that does not need to be on. This means turning off at the plug as leaving devices plugged in when not in use still draws power.
2. Ensure all windows are tightly shut to prevent drafts.
3. Double-check that no lights are left on before you leave, unless you are setting up security timers.
4. Set up a central heating schedule to prevent frozen pipes.
5. Ensure all taps are turned off tightly to prevent leaks.
6. If appropriate, empty fridges and freezers and turn off – why not take the opportunity to defrost the freezer?
7. Log all your actions on Green Rewards and you can earn points and win prizes for being sustainable.
If you are living in university halls, make sure you also report and faults or leaks to your hall manager or the Estates helpdesk. Take a look at what else you can do to save energy on campus and at home this winter.
Tis’ the Season to be Green
There are countless ways to lower your carbon footprint without dimming the holiday cheer, from the gifts you buy to the way you wrap and the tree you put it under.
