The university has achieved gold as part of the Hedgehog Friendly Campus initiative.
Thanks to the UoN Hedgehog Friendly Campus Group (HFCG) the university has achieved gold as part of the Hedgehog Friendly Campus initiative. This is a national award designed to protect hedgehogs and their habitats while raising awareness about the decline of one of the nation’s most beloved species.
Hedgehogs are vulnerable to extinction, mostly due to habitat loss. Over the past two years, the HFCG group has been working hard to help by:
- Surveying for hedgehog activity on campus and in the local community
- Installing two hedgehog crossing signs on University Park campus
- Regular campus litter picks
- Running a knowledge sharing event with UoN, Nottingham Trent University and University of Derby.

The work doesn’t stop there with further improvements to hedgehog habitats planned as part of the university’s wider biodiversity work.
