An update on the arrangements for the state funeral for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and how that will affect operations at the University of Nottingham.
State funeral
The state funeral will take place on Monday 19 September at 11:00. This will be a national public holiday when the university will be closed, and we will pause all teaching, research, activities and events.
However, preparations to welcome our new and returning students to campus remain unaffected and those moving into campus accommodation should join us as planned.
We are not expecting many students to arrive on Monday 19 September, however, we will contact international students who have booked travel arrangements to advise that there may be some travel disruption, notably in the London area.
Module enrolment
We contacted returning students last week to highlight the launch of the module enrolment period. Due to the public holiday for the state funeral, we are delaying the launch of the module enrolment period by 24 hours.
Module enrolment will now launch at 12:00 on Tuesday 20 September, and will close at 17:00 on Monday 26 September. Separate communications will be sent to you as a reminder once module enrolment is launched.
If you are new to the University this year, this does not affect you and we will contact you in due course to advise you of your module enrolment period.
Re-sit assessment results
Results from the summer re-sit assessments are due to be released on Wednesday 21 September and are unaffected by the public holiday for the state funeral.
Teaching
A small number of students have teaching scheduled to take place on Monday 19 September which will now be rescheduled or consolidated into teaching planned for later in the semester. We will contact those students who are affected over the next few days to explain how this will apply to them individually.
National period of mourning
The BBC has published a guide to activities for the remainder of the national period of mourning. During this period, the university will continue to follow guidance as it is published by the Royal Household, Cabinet Office, and Universities UK.
Other than on the day of the state funeral, the university will be open as usual, and you can access services and support for students as you would do normally.
As a mark of respect during the mourning period, we have suspended our usual proactive social media communications until Tuesday 20 September. Please do be reassured, however, that we are open and available to respond to queries and support you in making your plans to move – or return – to Nottingham
Welfare and support
Our colleagues are here to support you at this sad time should you require. Visit our Faculty Wellbeing & Support pages to explore the services you can access. The Department for Education has also highlighted Minded as a source of information to support students.
Notwithstanding this sombre period in our national history, we look forward to welcoming you to the university for the new academic year. In the meantime, may we send you support and best wishes and invite you to reflect on Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s connection with the university and city of Nottingham.
