Planned roadworks affecting access to University Park campus

Tuesday, 01 April 2025
National Highways are due to carry out significant roadworks on the A52 around University Park lasting approximately 12 months.

A start date hasn't yet been confirmed, but works are expected to begin in Spring 2025. The planned finish date will be in spring 2026. These works are expected to have significant impact on campus traffic, and mitigations are planned to ease this.

For the duration of this work there will be a 24/7 one-way system operated between the two roundabouts putting pressure on surrounding routes. To minimise the disruption, traffic will not be able to move through University Park in the same way it does now. There will be two barrier gates in place, one at Cripps Health Centre and one at Hallward Library, to deter drivers seeking to use University Park Campus as a short cut to bypass any traffic.

These barriers will be closed from 7am to 7pm, seven days a week for the duration of the roadworks.

Where are the barriers?

Hallward

Located on Cut Through Lane, between Hallward and The New Theatre, just after Cherry Tree Hill (coming from Portland). Traffic coming up Cut Through Lane will be required to turn right down Library Road, and follow the network round to Cripps Hill, where they will have to turn right towards North entrance.

Cripps Health Centre

Located just in front of the Zebra Crossing at Cripps Health Centre. Traffic coming up Cripps Hill can turn left or right down Lenton Hall Drive, before turning around and going back down Cripps Hill. Traffic coming up Beeston Lane will not be able to pass this point.

Hopper buses

Hopper bus services will be impacted by road closures on campus and the surrounding area.
Between 7am and 7pm Monday-Sunday, hopper services will be impacted as follows:

  • 901 and 903 services will not serve the Library Road stop (UN32) on Cut Through Lane and will not serve any of the stops on Beeston Lane. Use the East Drive (UN41), or George Green Library (UN31) stops instead.
  • 904 – will not serve the Library Road stop (UN32) on Cut Through Lane.

After 7pm each day hopper services will operate on their usual routes. There are no expected impacts on 902 and 906 services.

The 7am – 7pm closure of through roads on campus will also impact NCT 36U and 34C services. Please visit NCT’s website for further information.

Graduation, arrivals weekend and open days

On days with unusually high traffic, such as graduations, arrivals weekend and open days, the barriers will be temporarily opened.

Accessibility

The accessibility minibus will remain unaffected and those using disabled parking spaces will still be able to do so.

On-campus childcare

Those who use the on-campus childcare provision will be contacted by the Day Nursery or Playcentre. If required, vouchers will be issued to allow access. This will be managed by the childcare provider.

Cripps Health Centre

Patients at Cripps Health Centre will be allowed access by staff at the Cripps barrier if needed. Patients may need to provide proof of an appointment to be allowed through.
