University's top athletes posted a record set of results at the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Championships.
Nottingham’s Green and Gold won 17 national championships at BUCS. Hosted in Sheffield, the championships include the individual university finals for six sports; athletics, fencing, karate, swimming, badminton and climbing.
Over 4,300 students from across the UK competed during the 3-day event, with120 athletes from the University of Nottingham travelling for the event.
The university's wins included 11 gold medals in the karate championships, double gold for Deng Yaping scholar Zhou Meng in the badminton competition and a second 60m indoor hurdles win for track star Daniel Goriola.
On the first day of competition, sports scholar Daniel Goriola (LLB Law) defended his indoor 60m hurdle title with a time of 7.81. In the Karate competition, the club took the Overall Team title for the fifth consecutive season.

On the badminton court, the university took full advantage of the return of the para-badminton event, with para-sports scholar Rob Donald (BSc Computer Science) and Finn Goode (BSc Biology) defeating the University of Bristol in the Men’s Doubles final. First year student Zhou Meng won the Women’s Singles final, teaming up with Yiyi Tao to complete the double and add the Women’s Doubles gold.
Finally, the university's fencing team won more medals than any other institution, dominating the Épée event in particular where Florin Mirica (BEng Aerospace Engineering) and Rachael Lever (PhD Transformative Pharmaceutical Technologies) won the Men’s and Women’s titles.
