Personal safety in the city

Wednesday, 24 March 2021
As restrictions begin to ease and we’re soon able to spend time outside for non-essential reasons, it’s important to take care of your personal safety.

Nottingham is generally a safe place to live and study but, as with any city, incidents do occasionally happen. It’s important to bear the below advice in mind when out in the city or even on our campuses – especially after dark.

  • Wherever possible, try not to walk alone at night – walk with members of your household or one person from another household.
  • If you do need to walk alone at night, keep to main roads and well-lit areas and consider taking a taxi. Don’t take shortcuts through alleyways or wooded areas.
  • Always take your phone with you and make sure the battery is charged.
  • Familiarise yourself with any safety features on your phone and make sure they’re enabled – some models offer shortcuts to connect you to emergency services.
  • Stay alert. Beware of what is going on around you at all times. Listening to headphones and talking on the phone reduces your awareness.
  • Carry as few valuables with you as possible and don’t unnecessarily remove your phone from your pocket or bag. Use inside pockets and zipped bags.
  • Always tell someone where you’re going and what time you expect to be home.

If you’re out and about in the city and need to contact emergency services, you should call 999. If you’re on our campuses you should call our emergency security number on 0115 951 8888.
