Make sure you're up to date with any vaccinations and know where to go for treatment.
Hospitals in Nottingham are facing extreme pressure and the NHS is asking you to think twice about which service you need. Emergency departments are not always the best place to go for treatment - there are plenty of alternatives such as pharmacies and urgent treatment centres.
Only call 999 and attend emergency departments if it is a life-threatening emergency. Read on for more information, and if you are still unsure which service is best for you visit 111.nhs.uk or call 111.
Colds and flu
Winter always sees a spike in flu and colds. Make sure you keep as healthy as possible and if you are not feeling well, please refrain from coming onto campus.
To keep germs at bay, make sure you maintain good personal hygiene. Wash your hands often and clean work and study stations before and after use.
Most cases of the common cold and flu can be treated without seeing a doctor. Avoid putting pressure on health centres and only seek medical advice in extreme, persistent cases.
A pharmacist can give treatment advice and recommend flu remedies. It's important to get the flu vaccine if you're advised to.
Check if you have the flu, and find out how to treat it at home.
Register with a local doctor
If you’re living on or around University Park Campus you may be eligible to register at Cripps Health Centre, located on University Park. The health centre comprises general practitioners, clinics, travel vaccinations, a dental service and a pharmacy.
If you’re not eligible to register with Cripps Health Centre you can use the NHS 'Find a GP’ tool to find your nearest practitioner.
Stay up to date with vaccinations
If you register with the University of Nottingham Health Service, the Orchard Surgery or a local GP and have not yet been vaccinated against Covid-19, or if you need a second or booster dose, you will be able to access this from the NHS. Find out more on our Covid-19 vaccine webpages.
If you register with the UNHS you may also be eligible for a number of different vaccinations – including meningitis ACWY, MMR and HPV, which are highly recommended for new students who haven't had these before.
International students will be offered vaccinations when you come to study at the University of Nottingham. The vaccinations offered are ones that are recommended for students entering university.
