Take part in the Go! Greener halls competition

Save energy and win prizes.

Wherever you live there are actions you can take to save energy, save money and save the planet! We’re in a climate and nature emergency and we need to change the ways we live to be kinder to the planet. Reducing carbon emissions from energy use is crucial. On average, our on-campus halls account for over 4.8 million kg of CO2 each year. Per student, that’s almost equivalent to flying from London to New York! But together, we can make a change and make a difference.

The go! Greener Halls Competition takes place from Friday 1 November to Saturday 30 November in university catered halls, plus Melton Hall. If you live in any of these university halls you don't need to do anything to take part, you're automatically entered as a group.

The focus this term is on saving energy and water, so each hall will do their part to see how can show the biggest reduction. Plus, the winning hall will receive a prize!

Last year, the 1st and 2nd place halls saved over 31,400kWh worth of energy. That’s equivalent to powering around 90 refrigerators for a year.

What can I do to help?

  1. Switch Off Appliances
Unplug chargers, turn off lights, and switch off electronics when they’re not in use. Did you know that leaving devices plugged in when not in use still drains power? Standby mode still uses unnecessary energy.

  2. Take Shorter Showers
Cutting your shower time by just 2 minutes can save significant energy, especially in large halls. Can you take the 4-minute shower challenge to conserve both energy and water?

  3. Be Smart with Heating
Keep your windows closed when the heating is on, and dress warmly indoors instead of cranking up the heat. Use heating wisely—don’t heat rooms that aren’t in use.

  4. Use Natural Light
Instead of turning on lights during the day, make the most of natural light by opening curtains or blinds.

  5. Laundry Tips
Wash clothes in full loads and on a colder cycle. 80% of energy used in a wash cycle is used to heat the water. Avoid using energy hungry tumble dryers and opt for air drying instead.

  6. Spread the word
Encourage your friends and hall/house mates to reduce energy and CO2 emissions! Don’t forget to log all your sustainable actions on Green Rewards for the chance to win even more prizes every month.
