Take some time out

Monday, 09 May 2022
In the middle of exam revision? Take some time out to enjoy our beautiful campuses and focus on your wellbeing.

If you’re revising hard or working on deadlines, have you had a break and taken the opportunity to get outside to enjoy being around nature? It’s necessary to allow yourself a rest. Even a short walk outside can help you refocus, and you’ll likely find that the things you are working on make more sense when you give your brain time to focus on something outside of your studies.

Green spaces have been proven to have a positive impact on mental wellbeing and are associated with reduced levels of anxiety, depression and fatigue. According to the mental health charity Mind, the benefits of being outdoors include:

  • improving your mood
  • reducing feelings of stress or anger
  • improving your confidence and self-esteem

At the University of Nottingham, we’re fortunate to have some of the greenest campuses in the UK. You can enjoy sitting by the lake on Jubilee Campus or visiting the arboretum on Sutton Bonington Campus. Did you know that there are nine themed gardens on University Park? Have you explored them all? Find out more about our green spaces.

Over May and June we are taking some time to Celebrate Biodiversity on our campuses and beyond. If you also want to help preserve nature and give back to the community, you can join the student Conservation and Nature Society (ConSoc) and get involved with habitat management, litter picking and other outdoor conservation activities in and around Nottingham.

ConSoc have opened up some of their sessions to non-members for free so it’s a great time to give it a go!

Tree guard removal at Sutton Bonington
Join the university grounds team and the student Conservation Society in removing tree guards at Diamond Wood in Sutton Bonington. Tree guards were placed around the newly planted trees several years ago to protect them from being eaten and damaged by deer and other wildlife. They are ready to be removed now that the trees are old enough.

Meet at the Sutton Bonington main College Road entrance at 1.15pm followed by a walk over to Diamond Wood for a 1.30pm – 3pm session.

Wednesday 1 June, 1.15pm No Mow May surveying on University Park
Join the university grounds team and the student Conservation Society to survey areas after they have been left to grow wild as part of No Mow May to see the change in wildlife levels. Meet on Portland steps overlooking the lake.

For a full schedule of events, please visit the Sustainability webpages. For more ideas about things you can do at home and on campus sign up to Green Rewards and take part in nature and biodiversity activities to earn green points.
