The University of Nottingham is committed to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion and has made a pledge to ensure all students feel safe and supported at all times. As part of this commitment, we are supporting the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower lanyard scheme.
A Sunflower lanyard is a sign that can easily be recognised from a distance but is also discreet enough for people with a hidden disability to feel comfortable to use it. A sunflower lanyard discretely indicates that a person may need additional support, understanding or simply more time. It may be also worn by those who are exempt from wearing a face covering.
Our student blogger Issy wrote about what it's like to wear a sunflower lanyard at university and in day to day life, head over to her blog to find out more. For more information about about sunflower lanyards and what they mean check out our ‘Stronger Together’ video which was produced in partnership with the disabled students network and the students union.
Please bear in mind however, that not everyone who identifies as having a disability will choose to wear a sunflower lanyard. Disabled members of our community should not feel forced or obliged to wear one, it is an entirely personal choice.
Sunflower lanyards are available to collect on request from our library service, Trent building and Cherry Tree Lodge. For more information reach out to the Disability Support Team.
